“Ploradores” in catalan or “mourners” in english were women hired to express the pain and sadness at funerals. Their main function was to cry professionally, with the objective to make the departure more emotional and solemn. In many cultures, it was considered that crying was not only a sign of respect for the deceased, but also a means to guide the deceased onto the afterlife. Ploradores were spiritual beings, helping ease the transition from terrenal to divine life. In many cultures, it was believed that grief should be experienced publicly and collectively.
Cemeteries are places dedicated to visiting those deceased, to cry for the loss and to honor life as well. In a time where grief and death as loss some of its rituals, and this act of collective pain is almost non existent but rather, grief is somehting very private and individual, this piece serves as a homage to grief, cemeteries, collective pain, these women and their lost job.
